Architecture Archaeology and Contemporary City Planning

Architecture, Style and Politics – Now and Then

Klassik Stiftung, WEIMAR 14, 15 and 16 JUNE 2024

In 2024 the subject of the international workshop Architecture Archaeology and Contemporary City Planning will be "Architecture, Style and Politics – Now and Then"

How does architecture, and in a broader sense built environment, relate to politics? Is there a relation to style, and if so, what kind of articulation would that be? Style, evidently is not a straightforward concept, and must itself be problematised. Looking at examples from varied times and places, and contributions form different fields of study, will help to elucidate the discussion.

The event will start on the 14th June, here following you will find soon the leaflets and the program of the symposium:

ABOUT

AACCP (Architecture, Archaeology and Contemporary City Planning) is a multidisciplinary and progressive network, which has gathered together researchers, experts and practitioners from various fields to discuss topics related to urban development and city planning since 2014. One of the main aims of the network is to promote collaboration between different actors and increase understanding of a profitable co-existence of the past, present and future in urban environments. The AACCP workshop born from an idea by Per Cornell (University of Gotheborg, Sweden) and Giorgio Verdiani (University of Florence, Italy), it is a free, indipendent workshop, thought to promote the collaboration and the creation of links between scholars on the fields of Architecture, Archaeology and Contemporary City Planning. The main language is English, but any real interested scholar, from any country and with any academic or personal experience to share about the topics of the conference is welcome. The workshop is based on participation and is thought to allow reaonable time for each contribution and leaving generous time for questions/answers and constructive debate. The main formula of the workshop in place, thus some contributions may be admitted to take part online.

Location of the event – Weimar

This year’s event will take place in Weimar, Thuringia. Weimar is a phenomenon among German residential towns. For centuries, intellectual history, culture and urban design have been concentrated here in a very small area. It is the city where Goethe and Schiller lived, worked and published, as well as many other important scholars, musicians, philosophers and dramatists. After the "long 19th century" with its very own cultural history, in 1919, Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus. It was expelled to Dessau in 1924 by right-wing conservative forces. Weimar was Hitler's favourite city, and from 1937 a huge Nazi representation architecture was built here, the so-called "Gauforum". The Nazis also set up the Buchenwald concentration camp on Ettersburg nearby, where over 50,000 people perished. The GDR once again made its own mark in Weimar with urban planning interventions in the city centre and a completely new residential district in Weimar-West. Today, Weimar is institutionally characterised by the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, which presents the Cultural Heritage in over 21 buildings, and the Bauhaus University Weimar, which continues the education in architecture, media and art today.
